Responsible gold
Transition, not exclusion.
Responsible gold is part of the long-term PSMG vision. Our approach is practical rather than judgemental.
Mercury today
Why some miners use mercury.
Mercury binds fine gold, making very small particles easier to collect. It is simple and cheap. Handled or released incorrectly, it creates serious environmental and health risks. Changing established methods takes time, equipment, support and alternatives that genuinely work for the miner.
The opportunity
Gold does not need mercury.
19×Gold is about nineteen times heavier than water. Gravity-based methods recover it without mercury, and better equipment makes them increasingly effective.
Practical alternatives
A cleaner way to recover gold.
- 01Gravity recoverySluices, tables and other gravity equipment.
- 02Better equipmentImproved recovery equipment and operating practices.
- 03TrainingTechnical assistance, where practical.
- 04Environmental improvementLess mercury released into rivers and land.
Our position
What responsible gold means to us.
- 01Legitimate gold onlyWe do not knowingly buy gold linked to illegal mining, exploitation or theft.
- 02Working with minersLocal knowledge combined with appropriate technology, not lectures.
- 03A reason to changeA commercial incentive for cleaner gold production.
- 04Responsible sourcingIncreasingly important as our purchasing network develops.
We will never claim that gold is mercury-free, traceable or certified unless we have the systems and evidence to support it.
